The Islands of John's Bay, watercolor, 6x6, 35.00

Yesterday, Dec 1, was the first day of the December Facebook painting challenge. The challenge is to make 20 paintings or sketches before the holidays. Since I've been traveling so much I haven't held a paintbrush for over 2 months. I really needed something to get me back into the studio. Yesterday was an incredibly beautiful and warm day for Maine in December. I had planned to paint in the studio but could not pass up the chance to go to my favorite plein air spot, Pemaquid Point. This is a 6x6 watercolor. Even though it was a sunny day I still needed to work from the car. Watercolor is the best medium under those circumstances. It's been a long, cold, snowy winter and now a long, cold, drizzly spring. Hard to get out to do much plein air. I thought today I would post my daily painting wall that I've put together in the studio. I'm hoping the weather will improve so that I can add more paintings to this wall. I've started doing daily paintings in watercolor from my car. It's still too cold to paint outside but it's been too long waiting for warmer temps. Many of these paintings will be done at Gilsland Farm, the Audubon sanctuary in Falmouth, Maine. I've added a new blog page just for these paintings. The opening at the Damariscotta River Grille on Thursday was wonderful. Here are Caren and I at 4:00 wondering if anyone would come.

They came -old friends, new friends, artist friends, relatives, folks from the art community, and friends of the restaurant.

Even friends of friends. And they bought some paintings. Everyone agreed that the reception put on by the Damariscotta River Grille was one of the best they had ever been to. Many of our guests stayed and dined. Delicious.

Thanks Damariscotta River Grille. If you couldn't come to the reception go up to Damariscotta whenever you can. The show is up until November 1 and the food at the Grille is the best.

Portland Studio Tours

Sunday is the day for the Munjoy Hill Studio Tour and the Hidden Gardens Tour. Twenty seven artists at 14 locations will be participating in The Studio Tour which is free. I'll be participating at Portland Glass Blowing, 24 Romasco St., along with glass blower Ben Coombs, quilter Starr Jordan, and ceramic artist Eliza Perry. Both of these paintings have been accepted into the Barn Gallery Annual Juried Show in Ogunquit. The Barn Gallery has such a wonderful and long history of supporting artists. My college art professor was the well known Ogunquit painter John Laurent, son of the Ogunquit sculptor Robert Laurent. John used to take us as students to their galleries in the waning days of the early colony. All of the artists of the historic Ogunquit art colony had strong connections to and some were founders of the Barn Gallery. I'm very honored to have been once again selected for their annual juried show.

I spent the (long) weekend painting with my Pastel Painter friends at our annual Pemaquid Retreat. We had a fabulous time despite a lot of inclement weather. Something close to 100 wonderful paintings were created by 21 artists. This is the first of the paintings I did on Friday. The weather was cooperating for the most part that day although the fog kept rolling in and out. Right here it was sunny and warm. I hope you can see in this painting how much I love this place, especially when I can paint there with so many great friends.

I've been painting on the Eastern Prom in Portland this week with some of my friends. This is the first piece I did on Wednesday. Casco Bay as seen from the Prom is one of the most challenging seascapes to paint. The colors constantly change by the minute depending on clouds, atmosphere, fog etc. On Wednesday the changes were never ending. Makes for an interesting painting experience. I've been out plein air painting these last few days. This is my new Heilman pastel box. I thought some of you might like to see it, it's so beautiful when it is full of pastel sticks. It's functional too, a no mess way to transport all those fragile sticks. This is the small backpack size. I had a larger one that was just too heavy. This is working much better. Mr Heilman makes a great product. Thanks Mr Heilman.

I have just returned from a 23 day, 4000 mile road trip from Maine to Florida (and back). I visited many special places that I have painted in the past or wished I had painted. With nearly 2000 photos I am well prepared to share some of these special places with you in my daily painting project. I chose St Augustine Beach for the first of the new series. I had the pleasure of living in St Augustine for awhile and painted this beach scene many times. In fact, it was a painting at this location that was accepted into my first juried show, so an appropriate first choice for my new Road Trip project. For the next couple of months several pieces will be shown at the new Maine Studio gallery at 235 Presumpscott St in Portland. I also have about a dozen paintings available year round at the Nationwide Insurance Offices at 949 Brighton Ave also in Portland. Work at both locations is available for sale. Yes, I managed to find a marsh to paint in California. There aren't too many of them where I've been traveling but this one was special. It's at Carmel River Beach. Spectacular with the hills in the back, the Pacific ocean to the rear. I did a couple of paintings which I will post on the daily painting blog another day.

The mountain had been snowcapped for about 2 weeks but the snow cover was light enough that the mountain's character was very prominent. Peaks Island

Yesterday was a perfect day for Pastel Painters of Maine's annual trip to Peaks Island in Casco Bay. There were 10 of us including a few friends of PPOM. We had a great time. If you're on FB you can see a lot more photos of the trip. For me it was mostly a photo taking opportunity. Today I started work on a painting of the cliffs at Cushing Island which I photographed from Peaks. I've been thinking about this painting for a few years, hopefully it will be finished soon.

I had a very productive week. I painted Wednesday at Scarborough Marsh with a group of painter friends from Facebook. We had artists from New Jersey, Texas and Maine. What fun. It was a grey overcast day but at least no rain. This painting is much larger than I have been doing recently, so I was happy to get it finished and framed so quickly. It's pouring here today. In June we had 21 days of measurable rain. That doesn't count the foggy days. Now it's July 2 and it's still raining. A good day to get some framing done and remember when we could paint en plein air.

It was painted at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Sanctuary in Falmouth, Maine. It has a magenta underpainting so it has a little different look than some of my work.
